I had always been told Eric Meyer’s book CSS anthology was THE CSS book to read?

Sitepoint have a number of decent books. I quite like jQuery: Novice to Ninja, plus you can get them in paper form, eBook (PDF/Kindle/iPad/iPhone) and both at a discount. I think they offer money back guarantees and you can get some sample chapters too.

They do run promotions from time to time. I think I picked up 5 eBooks (cannot claim to have had time to read them all) for $20 and they had an interesting offer during the world cup…a number of books were assigned teams and the further the team got the cheaper the book got.
